JUVÉDERM® Injectable Gel Fillers – Important Information

Provided by Balanced You Medical Wellness

At Balanced You, your safety and comfort are always our top priorities. Please review the following important information about JUVÉDERM® treatments. We share these details to help you make informed decisions and feel confident in your care.

Are there any reasons why I should not receive JUVÉDERM® treatments?

You should not receive any JUVÉDERM® product if you:

  • Have a history of multiple severe allergies or serious allergic reactions (anaphylaxis).

  • Are allergic to lidocaine or the Gram-positive bacterial proteins used in these products.

  • Have had a previous allergic reaction to hyaluronic acid fillers.

If any of these apply to you, please let your provider know during your consultation so we can discuss safe alternatives.

What should I know about possible risks?

While complications are rare, any injectable treatment carries some level of risk. One potential complication is accidental injection into a blood vessel. This is uncommon but can lead to serious and sometimes permanent effects, including vision changes, blindness, stroke, temporary scabbing, or skin scarring.

If you experience any of the following during or after treatment, contact us or seek medical attention immediately:

  • Sudden changes in vision

  • Facial numbness, weakness, or drooping

  • Difficulty speaking or walking

  • Severe headache, dizziness, or confusion

  • White or pale areas of skin near the injection site

  • Unusual pain during or after your appointment

At Balanced You, we use advanced safety protocols and precise techniques to make these risks extremely rare.

We recommend postponing your appointment if you currently have any skin irritation, such as sores, acne, rashes, hives, cysts, or active infections, as these can delay healing or worsen irritation.

Please note that the effectiveness of removing dermal fillers after treatment has not been fully studied.

What are possible side effects?

The most commonly reported side effects from JUVÉDERM® injectable gels include:

  • Redness

  • Swelling

  • Tenderness or pain

  • Firmness or small bumps

  • Bruising or discoloration

  • Itching

  • For JUVÉDERM® VOLBELLA® XC, dryness was also reported

These reactions are typical of facial injection procedures and usually resolve within 30 days. If a side effect lasts longer, your provider may recommend treatment options such as antibiotics, steroids, or hyaluronidase (an enzyme that breaks down hyaluronic acid).

As with all injection procedures, there is a small risk of infection. We maintain strict sanitation standards and aftercare guidance to minimize this risk.

All JUVÉDERM® products are available only through licensed medical professionals. At Balanced You Medical Wellness, all injectable treatments are performed by properly licensed, experienced providers dedicated to your safety and confidence.

At Balanced You Medical Wellness, your safety is always our top priority. Please review the following information before your JUVÉDERM® treatment.

Specialized Training for Undereye Treatments
JUVÉDERM® VOLBELLA® XC should only be injected into the undereye area by providers who have completed specific training for this delicate treatment zone. Our injectors meet this standard to ensure your safety and the most natural results.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
The safety of JUVÉDERM® products during pregnancy or while breastfeeding has not been studied. For that reason, we recommend postponing treatment until after these periods.

Age Guidelines and Safety Data
Clinical studies for each JUVÉDERM® product were conducted within specific age ranges:

  • VOLUMA® XC: not studied in patients under 35 or over 65 (for cheeks), under 22 or over 80 (for chin), and under 32 or over 82 (for temples).

  • VOLUX® XC, VOLLURE® XC, and VOLBELLA® XC: not studied in patients under 22.

  • Ultra XC and Ultra Plus XC: not studied in patients under 18.

Your injector will confirm that the treatment you’re receiving is appropriate for your age and treatment area.

Approved Treatment Areas
Each JUVÉDERM® product is designed for specific facial areas. Use outside of FDA-approved regions hasn’t been established in clinical studies, so Balanced You provides treatment only where it has been proven safe and effective.

Scarring or Pigmentation History
If you have a history of excessive scarring (thick or raised scars) or pigmentation disorders, let us know during your consultation. These conditions haven’t been specifically studied and may increase your risk of pigment changes or additional scarring.

Other Aesthetic Procedures
If you’re planning a laser treatment, chemical peel, or similar procedure, your injector may recommend scheduling those at a different time. Performing them too close to your filler appointment can increase inflammation or irritation.

Medical Conditions and Medications

Please inform your provider if you are:

  • Taking medications that affect your immune system (such as steroids, chemotherapy, or autoimmune treatments).

  • Using medications that thin your blood (like aspirin, ibuprofen, or anticoagulants).

These may increase your risk of infection, bruising, or bleeding at the injection site.

Aftercare Recommendations
For the first 24 hours after treatment:

  • Avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol, and excessive sun or heat exposure.

  • Skip makeup for at least 12 hours to reduce the risk of irritation or infection.

  • Some mild redness, swelling, or itching is normal and should fade quickly.

Skin Laxity and Facial Hair
JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA® XC has not been studied in patients with significant looseness of the skin around the chin, neck, or jawline, nor has its effect on facial hair growth been evaluated.

Recent Skin Injuries
If you’ve had a skin injury near the area where filler is planned, let your provider know. You may have a higher risk of localized side effects.

Previous Filler Treatments
Please tell your injector if you’ve had other dermal fillers placed in the same area previously. This information helps us determine the safest timing and approach for your treatment.
